2020 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid Specs, Price, Release Dates

If you like off-road adventures but you don’t have the budget for a traditional off-road-focused SUV, the 2020 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid might be for you. With a standard all-wheel drive and 8.7-inch of ground clearance, the Crosstrek is ready to explore its way up and down obstacles that will prevent other small crossover SUVs.

The Crosstrek Hybrid is also useful even if you rarely leave the urban street. It offers a generous amount of space and a comfortable and smooth ride on rough pavement. Maximum cargo space is a bit less compared to what you get from a more common SUV, but it’s still adequate for most people.

This hybrid comes with a plug-in hybrid version of the Crosstrek four-cylinder engine. It returns an EPA-estimated all-electric driving range of 17 miles. Sure it’s not that much, but plugging in and recharging should make a big difference in reducing your fuel costs. After the battery is depleted, the Crosstrek hybrid delivers an overall fuel economy of around 35 mpg, which is 5 mpg better than the regular model.

Another the 2020 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid Plug-In advantage is its acceleration. In performance testing, it’s faster to zip off the line, which is good because the regular Crosstrek is a bit sluggish. But on the negative side, the Hybrid costs a lot more when new, although tax incentives help reduce the costs. Cargo space is also reduced since space is used for batteries. But overall, the Crosstrek Hybrid is recommended for buyers who are looking for an adventure-ready SUV that also has a good fuel economy.

The 2020 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid available in a single trim level that is comparable to the top Limited trim in the regular Crosstrek.

The roof rails and spoiler in black finish, along with unique 18-inch wheels in black with machine finish. The 2020 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid features the StarDrive Technology that integrates an electric motor, a 2.0-liter direct-injection BOXER engine, Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, and Lineartronic CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission).

StarDrive Technology employs two electric motors. One motor functions as an engine starter, it can be powered by the engine to function as a generator for the hybrid battery. The second motor powers the vehicle for hybrid and electric driving modes. It also charges the battery during regenerative braking. The total output is 148 horsepower.

The 2020 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid is capable of speeds up to 65 mph when in electric mode and is a full second faster from 0 to 60 mph than the standard Crosstrek. The new powertrain not only provides quicker acceleration, but also up to 90 MPGe with a total range of 480 miles.

The lithium-ion battery is mounted beneath the cargo area and enables the Hybrid to achieve an EV range of 17 miles. Like the standard Crosstrek, the Hybrid standard Lineartronic CVT features X-MODE and Hill Descent Control for enhanced performance in low-friction and off-road conditions. Its 8.7-inches of ground clearance and 1,000 lb. towing capacity provides versatility in both off-road and city driving.

Going inside, the 2020 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid offers an ample passenger space throughout the cabin with front seats and steering wheel feature a good level of adjustment. Five adults will sit comfortably there. The seats are comfortable and supportive thanks to the generous padding and bolstering. And based on the Crosstrek’s jacked-up stance, the driver and front passenger have broad outward views. Visibility is optimal all-round and the driver controls are easy to reach. High step-in height, level seating height, wide opening yet compact doors make it easy to in and out.

The Crosstrek Hybrid lithium-ion battery pack is located under the cargo compartment, which means reduced cargo space capacity. There are only 15.9 cubic feet of space behind the second row. That is still enough for hiking backpacks, tents, and some other camping gear. Folding the 60/40 backseat down will open 43.1 cubes, which can fit a pair of bicycles, too.

The 2020 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid is on sale and arriving now at dealers nationwide. Key competitors include the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, Hyundai Kona and Kia Niro.
